How much does each kind of personalized comic book cost?
The price of a personalized comic book depends mostly on who draws it: AI services charge about $10–$45 for a digital comic, and human artists charge by the page. On the two current commission sheets we checked, a couple costs about $150–$180 a page.

What drives the price of a personalized comic book?
Human hours drive the price of a personalized comic book more than anything else. A hand-drawn page of a custom comic book needs a script, pencils, inks, color, and lettering, and artists charge for each. AI services replace those hours with generation, so an AI comic costs tens of dollars and a hand-drawn one costs hundreds.
- Artist time per page: the Australian Society of Authors’ recommended minimums, reviewed September 2026, are A$115–A$229 per page for pencilling, A$86–A$171 for inking, and A$115–A$171 for coloring.
- Panel and character count: Jezebelle Tauralene’s $150 page covers 4–6 panels and 2 characters; more people cost more.
- Writing the story: one commission artist, cogamori, adds 20% for developing the story and dialogue.
- Revisions: Make Me A Comic includes unlimited edits; DearComic offers one complimentary remake request within 12 hours (Aug 2026).
A 2021 SFWA survey of 61 comics creators found that, for comics paid by the page, the median for writing plus illustration was $70 a page. Alison Wilgus, then chair of SFWA’s Comics Committee, said “many publishers are unfortunately still paying far below what is considered to be a minimum professional rate,” so a $150 commission page sits above what many publishers pay.
Make Me A Comic, a UK studio operating since 2011, sells those human hours directly, with books from £700: “Every comic we create is drawn by a real artist. We do not use templates or AI,” its site states.
What’s the cheapest way to get a personalized comic book that doesn’t look cheap?
The cheapest route where you judge a real-face preview before paying a flat price is a 12–18-panel AI comic for about $15–$25, printed by a print service — Lulu’s color comic format starts at $10.57 — against $600 or more for a hand-drawn book. mycomics.ai prints from $9.90 with free worldwide shipping, though its site doesn’t say whether generating the comic is included.
A cheap personalized comic looks cheap for three reasons: faces that drift between panels, generic template pages, and thin office paper. Each one is avoidable:
- Preview your actual faces before paying. Based on Us, PersonalizedComics.com, and DearComic (Aug 2026) offer free previews or samples; mycomics.ai has a free tier with starter credits.
- Check that faces stay consistent across panels, not just on the cover.
- Pick your own story over a page library: LoveBook and Hooray Heroes (Aug 2026) build books from pre-written or pre-designed pages.
- Print on proper stock: Lulu lists its comic formats on 70# paper, per its pricing page.
Based on Us is one option on that route: a comic from your photos from $14.99, with a free real-face preview and a printable PDF. Based on Us ships nothing, so printing is on you. To skip printing, mycomics.ai and PersonalizedComics.com both print and ship AI comics.
Is $19.99 a reasonable price for a personalized comic?
Based on Us’s $19.99 Standard comic is a reasonable price for 18 panels: $1.11 a panel, against $25–$37.50 a panel at Jezebelle Tauralene’s $150 starting price for a 4–6-panel page. Among AI services, mycomics.ai starts lower at $9.99 (credits or subscription), PersonalizedComics.com charges $19.99 for a 10–14-page digital comic, and DearComic $24.99 for 12 panels (August 11, 2026).
What $19.99 does not buy is human artistry or a printed book. A Based on Us comic is an AI-drawn interpretation of your photos, delivered as a private share link and a printable PDF. The free preview is a sample panel and cover drawn from your photos, so you judge the likeness before paying. All three tiers are one-time prices, with no subscription.

How much does it cost to print a personalized comic book?
Printing one copy of a personalized comic book starts at about $6–$15 through an online print service, before shipping. Lulu lists its 6.63 × 10.25-inch comic book format starting at $10.57 in saddle-stitch premium color, $8.54 as a color paperback, and $5.83 in black and white, per Lulu’s comic book pricing page (October 28, 2026).
Lulu’s figures are “starting at” prices that rise with page count, and all three formats share the 6.63 × 10.25-inch trim and 70# paper. Photo-book services work too: Mixbook lists softcover photo books “starting at $14.99.” A home printer or copy shop is fastest; ask the shop for a color quote. A Based on Us comic arrives as a printable high-res PDF for any of these routes.
How long does a personalized comic book take?
A personalized comic book takes minutes to an hour from an AI service, one to three weeks if it is printed and shipped, and one week to two months or more from a human artist.
- AI digital comics: minutes to about an hour, per each service’s own estimate — mycomics.ai says “ready to read online within minutes”; PersonalizedComics.com says the full comic is “usually ready within the hour.”
- AI printed: mycomics.ai prints in 7–10 days plus delivery; PersonalizedComics.com ships in about three weeks; DearComic’s hardcover ships in 7–14 business days (August 11, 2026).
- Template books: Wonderbly prints and dispatches in 2–4 working days; Hooray Heroes says “shipped in just 3 days” (August 12, 2026).
- Studios: Make Me A Comic quotes a minimum of 12 days for the artwork of its shortest books; Your Comic Story takes 4–6 weeks from order to delivery.
- Independent artists: Jezebelle Tauralene quotes 1–4 weeks; sxbxb8 quotes a minimum of 2 months.
What hidden costs come with a personalized comic book?
The hidden costs of a personalized comic book are shipping, rush fees, upfront payment, extra characters, privacy fees, and hardcover upgrades. They land mostly on artist commissions and printed books, and the biggest single fee we found is sxbxb8’s 80% of the base page price for each additional character.
- Shipping: LoveTales lists US standard shipping at $6.64–$8.31 per printed book (checked October 28, 2026); LoveBook does not show shipping on its pricing page.
- Rush fees: Make Me A Comic says “rush orders may be available for an additional fee”; Jezebelle Tauralene’s sheet says the same for short deadlines.
- Payment up front: sxbxb8 and Jezebelle Tauralene ask for full payment before work starts.
- Privacy: keeping your comic out of an artist’s portfolio costs 10% extra at cogamori and 15% at sxbxb8.
- Hardcovers: DearComic adds $29.99 for a shipped hardcover (August 11, 2026); LoveBook charges $69.99 for hardcover versus $54.99 paperback.
